AutoFilter in Google Docs Spreadsheet

My first complain when I started using Google Docs as my primary Office Suite is the lack of an Auto Filter.

These are the options:

-There is the option to use a filter by changing to List View with Menu View>ListView but it’s quite limited.

-There is a built-in function to filter a range and return the results in a new range. That might be useful for certain situations, but not for my general usage.

-And the winner is:

Someone has already solved this problem programming a script that does the trick, is not the perfect solution, but is definitivelly the best. To use it, go to the Menu at Tool>Scripts>Insert… and then look for it in the business section.

The best part is that now I know that scripting is possible in Google Docs.

Moving to the clouds

The rules have changed, now is completly posible to move from the desktop to the cloud, let’s do the leap:

A desktop or even a laptop is not competly needed for the daily average use today, let’s inspectmy daily activities:

-Emailing can be done from any of the excelent webmail services that exist today, I have been using Gmail for the last 4 months. It’s fun to see how the world is upsode down, I rememeber some years ago when we were trying to use webmail service like hotmail from the desktop email client like Outlook in Windows… Now I do the opposite, I fetch my messages from my domains to Gmail, and manage everything from the web.

-Productivity Suites: Lots of people uses Microsoft Office, many have moved to OpenOffice.org (LibreOffice), and some other use many other options, Now this huge applications are NO LONGER NEEDED, Most of the daily work can be done in the excelent Web Applications like http://www.zoho.com or of course Google Docs (http://docs.google.com).

-Photo Management can be hosted on free services like FLICKR or http://picasaweb.google.com

-Many Diffrent files can be hosted on free services like Dropbox or UbuntuOne.

There will be of course several caveats -that I’ll be bloggin here-, but the benefits are huge:

-I can relay on inexpensive -very light- hardware, In fact one of the resons for this movement is to prepera myself for the adoption of a tablet next year, now it does not matter wich one, because anyone will be compatible with what I need (maybe even the iPad).

How to remove the This Copy of Microsoft Office in not Genuine messages and keep using Microsoft Office

I recentyl posted a way to get rid of the “This Copy of Microsoft Office is not Genuine messages”, that involved getting rid of Microsoft Office itself and replace it by OpenOffice.org and Thunderbird, That is the preferred Method.

But if you are a Microsoft Lover and want to get rid only of the messages, and keep using Microsoft Office then this is what’s needed:

1- Close all the Microsoft Office Applications

2-Use the File Explorer to Navigate to your Windows System installation folder, usually:

C:\Windows\System32

C:\Windows\SysWow64 -for 64 bit systems-

And then locate and remove (just rename, if feel fear) the following files:

OGAVerify.exe

OGAAddin.dll

3-Ready! Start any Microsft Office, and you will see that is fast again and no more annoying messages.

How to send Ctrl Alt Del to a Remote Desktop Session

As we all know evrytime windows does not properly work (and that’s very often) we have to use Ctrl+Alt+Del, so how to do it if you are accession Windows from a Remote Desktop Connection:

From Windows: Press Ctrl + Alt + End

From Linux: Press Ctrl + Alt + Del (yes, because its harmless to linux)

From MAC: Press Ctrl + Option + ForwardDelete

From iPhone: If you are using JaaduRDP, select the top icon with the arrows, slide to the second windows, there you’ll see it, just click it (and close the arrows icon again to go back to the desktop).

Windows Server 2008 file permissions are just a joke

By design SAP Business One needs a promiscuous folder to be shared to all the users (this is where the pdf and xls exports will land, and is the place for add-ons installers and much more…), since there are some files that I don’t want some user to delete by accident, I’m trying to give permissions in order to avoid such deletions.
But either I can’t read, or Windows Server permissions are just a joke:
Even If I choose “deny full control” any user can delete that file, and wired thins is, ok the user can not see the file, but can delete it! come one!

How to connect for free outside of Mexico

If you are mexican, for sure you know Prodigy Internet, and the odds are you might already have a username and password.
Well Telmex offers free prodigy internet roaming via tmoblie in USA and some other countries, so when in an airport, or hot-spot, look for that.

Windows Server as Mission Critical Server

Windows Server needs restarting... again!

I finally installed the Terminal Server inside the Windows 2008 Server, and once again I had to restart the server because it needs it….
That server has been restarted when the SQL Server and SAP were installed, now because of this…etc.

So I wonder: How Can Windows Server be a Mission Critical Server, I you have to restart it everytime you install anything???

Update: Today we added the server to the current windows domain, and guess what, restart again!

How many users can connect to a windows share

Now that I had to read about the licenses for the Windows Server and the Terminal Sever, I understood many of the network problems we have faced with windows shares and printers in Windows XP PCs:

-Windows XP Home: Allows only 5 users to connect.
-Windows XP Professional: Allows only 10 users to connect.

Of course there are no technical reasons for that, is just a matter of marketing in order to force users to buy more expensive Windows Versions.

So, my recommendation, If you need to have a Windows share, Use Linux, Make a SAMBA partition for your windows users, and you have no users quantity limits, only hardware limitations, of course.

Terminal Server Licensing

OK, now we have a problem, as a trap, Microsoft User Licenses are a completely different story that Terminal Server Licenses, so it’ does not matter that we have paid a lot of money for Windows Server Licenses for our users, now we have to pay a lot more money to give remote access to those users via Terminal Server…
And yes, we also had to paid for Microsoft SQL licenses!

The more I know Windows, the more I hate it.

How to remove the This Copy of Microsoft Office is Not Genuine Messages

Unless you have a bunch of files with macros, you don’t really need Microsoft Office (even if you have them you can port them), so:

Go to Add/Remove Software in your Control Panel and Remove Microsoft Office.
Go to http://www.openoffice.org download and install it (this will provide Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access replacements, including support for Formulas and Drawings)
Go to http://www.mozillamessaging.com download thunderbird and install it (this will provide an OutLook replacement)
Got to https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/ and get the Lightnin Add-on, in order to incorporate calendaring functions.
